چکیده

In this paper, we propose a new photometric stereo method for estimating diffuse reflection and surface normal from color images. Using dichromatic reflection model, we introduce surface chromaticity as a matching invariant for photometric stereo, which serves as the foundation of the theory of this paper. An extremely simple and robust reflection components separation method is proposed based on the invariant. Our separation method differs frommost previous methods which either assume dependencies among pixels or require segmentation. We also show that a linear relationship between the image color and the surface normal can be obtained based on this invariant. The linear relationship turns the surface normal estimation problem into a linear system that can be solved exactly or via least-squares optimization. We present experiments on both synthetic and real images, which demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Gradient and Curvature from Photometric Stereo Including Local Confidence Estimation

Photometric stereo is one technique for 3D shape determination that has been implemented in a variety of experimental settings and that has produced consistently good results. The idea is to use intensity values recorded from multiple images obtained from the same viewpoint but under different conditions of illumination. The resulting radiometric constraint makes it possible to obtain local est...

Enhanced Photometric Stereo with Multispectral Images

We introduce a technique based on multispectral images aimed at improving Lambertian photometric stereo. Many photometric stereo algorithms assume Lambertian reflectance, but deviations from this ideal produce errors in shape reconstruction. To alleviate this problem, we exploit the wavelength-dependence of material reflectance. Based on the observation that reflectance at certain wavelengths f...

Example-based Reflectance Estimation for Capturing Relightable Models of People

We present a new approach to reflectance estimation for dynamic scenes. Non-parametric image statistics are used to transfer reflectance properties from a static example set to a dynamic image sequence. The approach allows reflectance estimation for surface materials with inhomogeneous appearance, such as those which commonly occur with patterned or textured clothing. Material reflectance prope...

A Theory of Photometric Stereo for a Class of Diffuse Non-Lambertian Surfaces

Photometric stereo is a method of reconstructing a surface from the amount of light reflected by it. This is done by using prior knowledge of the surface reflectance to estimate the surface normal at all visible points. The theory of photometric stereo has been extensively developed for surfaces and illumination geometries that give rise to a Lambertian reflectance map. For non-Lambertian refle...

Photometric Stereo for General Reflectance and Lighting in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Information Science and Technology

Understanding the 3D shape information is a fundamental problem in computer vision. Among various shape estimation technology, photometric stereo is highlighted for its ability to produce detailed surface normal direction at its image resolution. It takes a set of images captured under varying illumination and a fixed viewpoint as input. Traditional photometric stereo assumes the Lambertian ref...
